Biography

Professor Daniel Tan graduated from the University of Queensland with a BAppSc (Hort Tech) (Hons 1) in 1991 and a PhD in 1999. He is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (2015) and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SF HEA). In 1993, he was a senior executive at Keppel Land International Ltd in Singapore and led the project management of the US$150 million Sedona Hotel projects in Yangon and Mandalay, Myanmar, the master planning of the Club Med hotel and golf resort in Bintan Island and acquisition of Wisma BCA office towers in Jakarta, Indonesia. In 2003, he accepted a lectureship in agronomy in the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment (FAE). He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2010, to Associate Professor in 2015 and to Professor in 2021. He is currently the Development Agriculture Theme Leader of the Sydney Institute of Agriculture, Faculty of Science Postgraduate Coursework Program Director, Cambodian Country Coordinator of the Sydney Southeast Asian Centre and Agriculture, Food and Environment Node Leader of the Sydney Vietnam Centre. Daniel has been a member of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (AIAST) since 1991. He was Vice President from 2004 and was elected President of the NSW Division from 2011. He was elected a Director for the AIAST National Board in 2015 and re-elected in 2017 and 2020. Daniel is also on the NSW Weeds Society Committee as Newsletter A/Editor. He is Project Leader of Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) funded project: CSE-2015-44 – Sustainable Intensification of Lowland Rice Systems in Northwest Cambodia. In recent years, Daniel has presented papers at the International Crop Science Congress in Brisbane, the 4th, 5th and 6th International Cotton Conferences in Texas, U.S.A., Mumbai, India and Goiania, Brazil and convened sessions at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) in Vienna, Austria. Daniel is on the Journal Editorial Boards of Agriculture and Frontiers of Plant Science and Farming System.
