From research to release: A pipeline approach to sustaining environmental weed biocontrol in NSW | Dr Ben Gooden
Abstract
Biocontrol is a sustainable weed management strategy employing natural enemies to reduce weed impacts on agriculture and the environment. The NSW Environmental Trust-funded weed biocontrol pipeline project was initiated in 2015 through a partnership with CSIRO, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, and NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, to addresses critical gaps in management of environmental weeds. The primary aim of the project is to enhance the ecological value of NSW environments by mitigating the impacts of established weeds. Leveraging a robust prioritisation framework, the project selects high-threat weeds and promising biocontrol agents for rigorous research. This is achieved through strategic selection, comprehensive risk assessment, and effective deployment of biocontrol agents. The project focuses on further investigating candidate agents that have been researched in other countries, to ‘piggyback’ on existing research while ensuring their safety for Australian ecosystems, before seeking release approvals. Large-scale releases of approved agents are then implemented across NSW, often in collaboration with local communities, followed by detailed field impact evaluations. To date, the project has delivered risk analyses for nine weeds and facilitated the release of approved biocontrol agents for six weeds, representing a significant 44 % of all agents approved nationally since 2010. This underscores the project’s substantial contribution to national weed biocontrol efforts. This presentation will provide an overview of the project's history, highlighting successful community-partnered biocontrol agent releases and exploring future opportunities to advance biocontrol research and practice in NSW. By minimising herbicide reliance and fostering biodiversity recovery, this project delivers sustainable, long-term weed management solutions.
Biography
Ben is a Senior Research Scientist and Team Leader of the CSIRO Health and Biosecurity's Weed Management Systems team, based on Canberra. The Team co-manages Australia's national weed biocontrol research program, in collaboration with Dr Michelle Rafter who is Team Leader of the Weed Management Systems team, based on Brisbane. Together, the two teams develop, and implement on-ground, biological and other sustainable weed control solutions, to safeguard Australia's precious agricultural resources and natural ecosystems.
