Moving people towards action - practical skills for the workplace | Wendy Gibney

Abstract

Community engagement – moving people towards action is a nationally accredited two-day course mapped to BSBPMG429, Apply project stakeholder engagement techniques. This course focuses on the practical skills needed to engage the community and increase adoption of desired behaviours. These skills can be used to develop positive relationships with landholders and other stakeholders for long term change in weeds management. The NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) training team has been delivering the course for 8 years. Two hundred and thirty-one people have attended 21 courses in NSW. Course participants include people who work for Local Government, Local Lands Services, National Parks and Wildlife Services, Landcare and DPIRD. The five topics covered in course are: 1. Learning about the people we are working with; 2. Finding a solution that meets their needs 3. Targeting and tuning messages; 4. Identifying and overcoming barriers; 5. Seeking commitment and providing support. In this presentation, we will discuss the components of the course and show practical examples of how skills learned in the course have been applied to community engagement in weeds management. We will also present the course participants' short- and long-term evaluation of the course.

Biography

Wendy Gibney has worked for the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development since 2016. Her current role is Development Officer - weeds information. This role includes updating WeedWise and developing a variety of weeds information resources. She also helps her team with training including delivering and assessing the prohibited matter course and the community engagement - moving people towards action course. Prior to this role, Wendy worked on natural resource projects for Landcare and local government. Wendy has a Bachelor of Environmental Science and a Masters in Agriculture.
