Synopsis
Australia is facing a critical shortage of foster carers and without urgent attention there is a real risk that the traditional foster care system will decline into extinction.
The Commonwealth has responsibilities that can play a pivotal leadership role in facilitating better support for carers in state-based systems. This presentation will explore the efforts of Families Australia and the National Foster Care Sustainability Group who have directly informed the Federal Government of three key solutions for action. These recommendations have been designed for the Commonwealth to eliminate barriers and empower jurisdictions to enhance their practices and give children in care, and their carers, the support they deserve.
