Synopsis
The child protection system is in crisis, with a growing number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families involved and children placed in out-of-home care. This research emphasises the importance of recognising families as leaders and key participants in child protection decision-making.

Biography
Proud Ngugi woman from Quandamooka and Social Worker. Undertaking many frontline roles for 15 years with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in family support and child protection. Karina realised that there needs to be better options for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and started a PhD in 2024 at the University of Queensland looking at peer parent and family advocacy with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in contact with or at risk of entering child protection.
