With HIV prevention expanding into pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and treatment-as-prevention, it is paramount that pharmacists are upskilled in this emerging area of medicine, particularly with the availability of HIV ARTs in community pharmacy, and the April 2018 listing of PrEP on the PBS. This session aims to empower pharmacists to have a greater understanding of HIV prevention, in particular, provision of high-quality PrEP services in community pharmacy. Learning objectives • Discuss the current state of HIV epidemic and HIV prevention strategies in Australia • Define pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP); describe the medication (tenofovir/emtricitabine combination) and dosing used for PrEP • Review current evidence supporting the indication and identify patients who may benefit from PrEP • Discuss PrEP in light of early undiagnosed HIV infection and development of resistance, including identification of possible acute HIV infection • Describe protocols related to prescribing and providing PrEP, including routine STI screening • Provide information about PrEP to patients, including importance of adherence and process of ceasing PrEP • Discuss treatment as prevention as a HIV prevention intervention, including recent data supporting zero transmission risk when undetectable Competency standards: • 2016: 1.6.3, 2.1.1, 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.2.3, 3.2.5, 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 3.2.2, 3.2.5, 3.3.1, 3.3.2, 3.3.3, 3.6.2 • 2010: 1.3.2, 1.4.2, 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.2.3, 4.3.3, 6.1.1, 6.1.3, 6.2.2, 6.3.1, 6.3.2, 6.3.3, 8.1.3, 8.2.3
