Details

The Victorian Parliament passed the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill on 29 November 2017, making Victoria the first state in the country to legalise voluntary assisted dying for the terminally ill. The legislation will now go through an 18-month implementation period, to clarify roles and processes, including those involving pharmacists before it comes into effect in June 2019. Irrespective of one’s moral stance on the issue, this is a timely opportunity for pharmacists across the country to begin thinking about the role of pharmacists in voluntary assisted dying. The precedence set by Victoria will likely influence voluntary assisted dying bills in other states in the future. Using the Victorian framework and legislation as a point of reference, this session will explore key practical and ethical considerations regarding the role of pharmacists in voluntary assisted dying. To put the Victorian legislation in context, this session will explore voluntary assisted dying in other countries while providing a brief overview of the other states’ legislative activity in this area. Learning Objectives • Describe the evidence for and against voluntary assisted dying citing literature and examples of voluntary assisted dying, in other countries to put the Victorian legislation in context. • Describe the process in which an eligible individual can access voluntary assisted dying in Victoria. • Explain the role of pharmacists in voluntary assisted dying according to the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017. • Discuss the key practical considerations for pharmacists and pharmacies that participate in voluntary assisted dying.
