The practice of oncology pharmacy is rapidly advancing. With the exponential growth of cancer medicines, including targeted therapies such as monoclonal antibodies and oral agents, pharmacists working in this area are well positioned to be the central information point for oncologists, patients undergoing treatment, and the larger cancer care team. This session will focus on how targeted agents and oral chemotherapy have changed the treatment landscape, and will equip both hospital and community pharmacists with the knowledge to be even more involved in patient treatment decisions and care. New and emerging therapies will be covered, along with the various resources that pharmacists in this area may find helpful. Finally, a focus on toxicities relating to both conventional and targeted therapies will be discussed. Learning Objectives: • Discuss the history and basic pharmacology of chemotherapy agents • List new and emerging oral therapy agents • Explain the place of oral chemotherapy in treatment protocols, and their use in particularly populations • Discuss aspects of cancer management applicable to the community pharmacy • Discuss chemotherapy toxicities, with a focus on the differences between conventional therapies and targeted agents, in context of pharmacokinetics, as well as toxicity management in patients • Recognise information sources useful for pharmacists caring for patients undergoing cancer treatment Competency Standards • 2016: 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.2.2, 3.2.5, 3.3.1, 3.3.2 • 2010: 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 2.3.1, 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.3.3, 6.1.2, 6.2.1, 6.2.2, 7.1.2, 7.2.2
