Details
Increasingly, a significant amount of Australians are choosing to regularly remove common food components from their diet in an effort to improve unpleasant symptoms such as headaches, hay fever, tiredness, gastrointestinal symptoms and behavioural changes. There is a huge spectrum of gastrointestinal conditions from food sensitivities ranging from an adverse reaction to a food component or additive to having a damaging autoimmune response.
Intolerances to food are poorly understood by the health industry with diagnosis being challenging due to the involvement of many food components and varying reactions of individuals. Elimination diets are utilised to identify a source of symptoms, however they should be carried out under the advisement of a specialised health professional to avoid malnutrition.
Pharmacists regularly come across newly diagnosed patients, those who enquire about food intolerance and those with health complaints that may be triggered by an intolerance. With the surplus of information available, it can be difficult for patients to understand the best strategies to assist their diagnosis. By being well informed of these conditions, pharmacists are well placed to educate their communities and assist them in making more informed decisions.
