The session will increase pharmacists’ awareness of changes in the area of insomnia management, with the opportunity to update their clinical knowledge to improve patient health outcomes through the quality use of medicines. Led by Professor Nicholas Glozier, this session will cover the pharmacist’s role in sleep disturbance management, including taking a proactive role in patient management, focusing on reducing the overuse of benzodiazepines and other sedatives and exploring novel approaches to long-term insomnia management.
Learning Objectives
• Describe the characteristics of sleep disturbance and insomnia, including contributing factors
• Identify potential therapy options for the long-term management of insomnia, including novel approaches
• Discuss the disadvantages of long-term benzodiazepine therapy in insomnia management and potential strategies to reduce use
• Identify referral pathways for patients seeking management of insomnia following short-term therapy failure
