Overview

addiction, management and enhance service provision

Details

2018 heralds many changes that will require a heightened response from the entire health care team to identify, support and refer consumer’s dependant on opioids including codeine for the best treatment outcomes. Pharmacists play an integral role in understanding how these changes will impact on those currently dependent on opioids and how to identify these patients, how to support and educate patients on managing pain and where and how to refer. This session will provide an overview for current opioid replacement therapy pharmacists in Australia to provide context to any potential changes seen, and whether the system will be prone to overload in the current climate. This session aims to empower pharmacists to achieve best patient outcomes through understanding what resources are available, how to utilise these resources to support patients and refer them to appropriate care. Learning Objectives • Utilise empathy and engagement with patients to provide patient-centred care and promote self-management and empowerment • Confidently have effective conversations with consumer’s dependent on opioids or their carers and make appropriate referrals. • Outline the complexities of care in managing consumers dependent on opioids • List the changes occurring in 2018 and the impact these may have in the treatment of consumers dependent on opioids • Summarise the perceived need for managing consumers with opioid dependency and perceived barriers to seeking and receiving help. • Identify referral pathways for pain management Competency Standards: • 2016: 1.1.3, 1.6.1, 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.1.3, 2.2.2, 2.2.3, 3.1.2, 3.2.2, 3.2.3, 3.2.5 • 2010: 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.4.1, 2.1.2, 2.3.1, 2.3.2, 4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.1.3, 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.2.3, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, 4.3.3, 5.1.2, 5.1.3, 6.1.2, 6.2.2, 6.2.3, 6.2.4, 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 7.1.4, 7.2.1, 7.2.2
