Maintaining a balanced diet ensures the body is provided with essential energy, vitamins, and minerals to function optimally. Nutrient requirements change throughout a life time and are required to meet nutritional needs. For consumers, information on nutrient deficiency can be overwhelming and is often conflicting. The range of supplements on the market increases the risk of selection errors and without evidence based advice can lead to lack of results and/or drug interactions. Navigating through this information is challenging and pharmacists are well placed in the community to provide safe and practical recommendations to prevent and treat nutritional deficiencies. This session, presented by Dr Elizabeth Steels, aims to empower pharmacists and better equip them with evidence based knowledge in preventing nutritional deficiencies by looking at the underlying cause of the imbalance. Dr Steels will provide attendees tools to assist them in engaging patients about nutrition and enhance their health outcomes. Learning objectives • Recognise common nutritional deficiencies found in the community. • Identify the cause of common nutritional deficiencies. • Explain the current best practice measures in supplementation to support nutritional requirements. • Describe the importance of collaborative care in treating nutritional deficiencies.
