Details

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive, incurable, neurological condition that affects over 70,000 Australians on a daily basis. Beyond its well documented physical effects are its effects on patients’ psychosocial health. From anxiety, depression and potential social isolation caused by unpredictable fluctuations in motor control to cognitive decline seen in the advanced stages, Parkinson’s disease affects patients, family and friends. It is imperative that pharmacists are cognisant of all relevant issues in order to provide quality advice aimed at ensuring medication concordance, quality use of medicines and quality of life. This session will focus on the current treatment options for Parkinson’s disease and the ground breaking research in the area of diabetes and its link to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease. Learning objectives: • Recognise the importance and rationale for the early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease • Describe the treatment options for the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, considering stage of disease, adverse effects, comorbid conditions, mechanism of action, and adherence issues • Describe the non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease • Identify opportunities for pharmacists to educate patients on optimizing treatment, including food and drug interactions, dosage forms, adherence, and adverse effects • Explain the findings of new research establishing a potential link between diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases Competency Standards: • 2016: 3.1.2, 3.2.3, 3.3.2 • 2010: 4.2.2, 6.1.2, 7.1.2, 7.1.3
