Details
Research suggests our gut microbiome performs a range of functions in human physiology, beyond the maintenance of digestive health. Alterations to our native commensal microorganisms can also affect and be effected by drug digestion and metabolism, leading to microbiome associated digestive and immune disturbances, and individual drug responses. This session will explore the current evidence in this area and discuss the pharmacist’s role in the use of specific interventions in practice.
Learning Objectives
• Identify the range of disease states potentially linked to changes in microbiome
• Discuss the link between microbiome and immune responses and immune conditions
• Describe the factors influencing a healthy microbiome
• Describe how pharmacists can discuss microbiome with patients and the role played in broader treatment regimens
• Apply knowledge in counselling patients on medications that influence the microbiome
