Details

First-line management of overweight and obesity is primarily through lifestyle modifications, such as kilojoule restriction and increased physical activity. A large number of non-pharmacological products are available that can aid patients in managing their weight. The product class with the greatest evidence base for effectiveness as an obesity treatment is meal replacements, used in very low energy diets (VLEDs) or low energy diets (LEDs). This Heath Service Delivery workshop will support pharmacists in delivering a professional obesity health service in a community setting. Learning objectives • Discuss various ways in which meal replacement products can be used for weight management • Assess patients’ individual suitability for various lifestyle changes, including meal replacement diets • Provide appropriate counselling for patients seeking lifestyle changes, including the safe and effective use of meal replacement diets • Describe the service delivery model and how it can benefit pharmacy • Generate an action plan for professional service implementation • Recognise the importance of evaluation and how to sustain a professional service • Discuss challenges and facilitators to implementing an obesity health service Competencies addressed: • 2016 – 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, 1.1.4, 1.1.5, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.2.3, 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.3.1, 1.3.4, 1.4.1, 1.5.1, 1.5.2, 1.5.3, 1.5.4, 1.6.1, 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.1.3, 2.1.4, 2.2.1, 2.2.2, 2.2.3, 2.3.1, 2.3.2, 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 3.2.1, 3.2.4, 3.2.5, 3.3.1, 3.6.1, 3.6.2, 3.6.3, 4.1.1, 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, 4.3.3, 4.3.4, 4.4.1, 4.4.2, 4.4.3, 4.4.4, 4.4.5, 4.5.2, 4.5.3, 4.7.3, 4.7.5, 5.1.3. • 2010 – 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.4, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.4.1, 1.5.1, 2.1.3, 2.3.1, 2.3.2, 2.5.1, 2.5.2, 2.6.3, 3.1.1, 3.1.3, 3.3.1, 3.3.2, 3.4.1, 3.4.2, 3.4.3, 3.5.1, 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.3.2, 4.3.3, 6.1.1, 6.1.2, 6.1.3, 6.2.1, 6.2.2, 6.2.5, 6.3.1, 6.3.2, 6.3.3, 7.1.1.
