Details
With the up-scheduling of codeine to prescription-only, pharmacists must re-think approaches to pain management. The utility of NSAIDs in the pain managing paradigm is well-established, with a range of NSAIDs available over-the-counter, each with varying safety profiles, efficacy and appropriateness based on the patient’s characteristics and current disease states.
This session will explore the range of NSAIDs available over-the-counter, including ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen, and where these fit in the management of a range of pain types.
Learning objectives
• Discuss various factors that contribute to pain, including lifestyle circumstances such as obesity and ageing
• List the types of pain in which NSAIDs may be appropriate
• Discuss and compare a range of NSAIDs and NSAID-combination products (e.g. paracetamol/ibuprofen, paracetamol/naproxen) based on efficacy, duration of action, safety profile and adverse effects, COX-selectivity and indications
• Discuss the efficacy of NSAIDs compared to codeine-based products
• Identify and discuss lifestyle modifications that may assist in pain management
• Utilise empathy and engagement with patients to provide patient-centered care and promote self-management and empowerment
• Identify referral pathways for pain management
