Pharmacists have been compounding medicines for generations. Compounding has evolved to become a specialised pharmacist-led service, offered to patients with specific medication needs. This session will cover the types of compounding available, including dosage forms and delivery methods, the benefits of providing compounding services to patients and how to apply best practice during compounding medications. In addition the session will explore factors to consider when implementing a compounding service in your pharmacy. Learning objectives • Discuss regulations and professional practice standards relevant to compounding. • Discuss the responsibilities of the compounding pharmacist. • Discuss the importance of conducting a risk assessment for a patient presenting a compounded product, and conduct a risk assessment. • Identify appropriate circumstances for compounding a product. • Develop a protocol for provision of third party compounding services. • Identify areas of opportunity for future compounding.
