This Masterclass aims to mitigate the occurrence of adverse events through the quality use of medicines (QUM). The session will use case studies to highlight some complex scenarios to provoke thought, discussion and education in medication reviews, consumer education and collaboration with prescribers and other allied health professionals to achieve the best possible health outcomes. Learning objectives • Discuss the pharmacist’s role in facilitating quality use of medicines • Evaluate the use of medication review opportunities and medicines adherence tools to enable quality use of medicines • Interpret how quality use of medicines and medication safety principles apply at both the consumer and community level • Recommend suitable responses to best-practice quality use of medicines principle across multiple areas of practice including community, hospital and general practice • Describe examples of current real-world QUM issues in the Australian context such as effective opioid prescribing and minimising opiate misuse.
