This engaging session will see three experts present on different perspectives on the use of evidence in education and include an audience discussion. GEIS 2018 education sector leads, Dr Donovan and Professor Ritter, will be joined by Aaron Lyon, Associate Professor at the University of Washington’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences, and Director of their School Mental Health Assessment, Research and Training (SMART) Center and moderated by Matthew Deeble, Director, Education Practice Lead at Social Ventures Australia. They will explore: 1. Generating and synthesising rigorous evidence on effective programs and practices 2. Supporting teachers and leaders to make better decisions using evidence 3. Understanding how best to implement what works in different school contexts and situations

Biography

Matt is responsible for Evidence for Learning‘s strategy, fundraising and system engagement and promotion. Matt has more than 20 years’ experience in building and running enterprises in education, health and clean technology. He was involved in provisioning the first Internet services in Australian schools and developing internet management software used by thousands of schools in Australia, NZ, the UK and USA. More recently he has worked on data, identity and privacy projects for the National Schools Interoperability Program and on an online career profiling service in Higher and Vocational Education. He is also a non-executive director of the evidence efficiency platform; Covidence. Matt holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Bachelor of Arts from Monash University.

Dr Jenny Donovan

Biography

Dr Jenny Donovan is currently relieving as the Deputy Secretary for Education Services in the NSW Department of Education. Her substantive role is as the Executive Director of the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation in the NSW Department of Education (CESE). Jenny established and has led CESE which is an innovative hub for evidence-based policy and decision-making in education. CESE provides data, analysis and evaluation to inform and improve effectiveness, efficiency and accountability across the entire spectrum of the NSW education system. ​ Previously, Jenny was the Deputy Director of a not-for-profit research and assessment organisation attached to the University of New South Wales. Jenny began her career as a high school teacher in Sydney’s western suburbs, and has held many roles in both operational and policy arms of state public service.

Biography

Aaron R. Lyon, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington (UW). He is also Director of the UW School Mental Health Assessment, Research, and Training (SMART) Center, an implementation research and technical assistance center focused on supporting the use of evidence-based prevention and intervention practices to promote mental health in the education sector. Dr. Lyon’s research emphasizes methods of increasing the accessibility, efficiency, and effectiveness of interventions for children, adolescents, and families; delivered within contexts (e.g., schools) that routinely provide care to chronically underserved populations. Dr. Lyon is currently Principal Investigator on grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Justice, Institute of Education Sciences, and various local and national foundations in the United States.

Biography

Gary Ritter is Dean and Professor in the School of Education at Saint Louis University. Prior to his 2018 appointment as Dean, Ritter was the holder of the Endowed Chair in Education Policy at the University of Arkansas. His primary areas of interest are teacher quality, teacher evaluation, postsecondary access for low-income students, and the implementation and evaluation of programs aimed at improving educational outcomes for low-income students.
