Biography
Dr. Marla Petal is Senior Advisor for Education and Risk Reduction for Save the Children. Her education includes a Ph.D. in urban planning and MSW with focus on community organization, planning and administration.
She has worked in policy, programming, educational materials development, training and research, and led large-scale urban risk education programs, and designed online self-study courses that have reached 125,000 school teachers and administrators, with 1.5 m. lessons and 75,000 course completions.
Her research background is in education policy, full inclusion, earthquake epidemiology, and the evidence-base for public education for disaster risk reduction. Interest areas include comprehensive school safety, social and behavior change communications, evidence-based action-oriented key messaging, structural awareness for seismic safety, games and music for change, scalability, sustainability, equity and justice.
